Wednesday, June 22nd

Now that we are in our final days at school, we have been busy finishing up our work for the year. I can't believe how fast this year has passed!

The students have been working hard making Grade 1 Memory Books, Animal Fact posters and working with shapes in Math during their last full week of school.

We hope all of the Dad's enjoyed their Father's Day presents! The works of art were inspired by the book, The Best Part of Me. The children took a lot of pride in their best parts and were very excited to present them as gifts.

On Monday, we will be sending home all student work from this year. Please send a reusable bag to school with your child so that they may carry it all home safely. They are very excited to finally get to take their journals and stories home!

Tuesday, June 7th

Please check your child's backpack for two notices that went home today. We have had several confirmed cases of Pink Eye in the Grade 1 classes as well as a confirmed case of Head Lice. Please talk with your child about hand washing and how to avoid the spread of these germs.

If you think your child has pink eye, the best thing you can do is get a prescription for eye drops and keep them home for the day. Pink eye is extremely contagious, and we are doing everything we can to prevent it from spreading any further.

Tuesday, May 25th

Today we did some journal writing about our field trip to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. I am very impressed with how many students are putting more and more into their work. Their sentences are well thought out, neat and organized, they are beginning to self check for capitalization and punctuation and their drawings are becoming more detailed. I am seeing some great Grade 2 quality work!

I encourage all the students to continue to work on printing neatly with attention to upper and lower case letters. We have talked about when to use upper case letters, such as at the beginning of a sentence, in names, places, days and months.

Home Challenge: Practice printing your first and last name with the first letter uppercase and the rest lower case.  If you are already good at your first and last name, try your middle name too!

Important Dates to keep in mind:

May 31st - Playground Grand Opening 11:00 am - 2:00 pm - all students will receive a free pizza lunch    on this day.

June 9th - Volunteer Tea - Notice coming home tomorrow

Tuesday, May 24th

I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend. It sounded like many families spent some quality time together - we shared about trips to Drumheller, the Titanic Exhibit, camping, going to the cabin and having playdates with friends!

Today in math we began talking about 2-D and 3-D shapes and learned how to draw them in our journals. We are also reviewing addition and subtraction number sentences.

This afternoon we had the opportunity to see three baby ducklings from the grade 3 classes. The ducklings, which were born last night made a visit to our classroom and we had the chance to watch them up close! They were so soft and fluffy!

Inglewood Bird Sanctuary:

We had a fabulous day at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary despite the gloomy weather forecast.  We managed to dodge the rain for much of the day and saw an amazing variety of animals in this beautiful little area.  We encourage all our families to take the time to explore this (FREE!) area on a nice sunny day this year - as the weather warms, there will be even more wildlife! You will be amazed what you will see and hear so close to downtown!

Our Day:

Today was our Spell-A-Thon and all our students felt excited and proud about their results.  The quiz took us most of the morning to finish and we had to draw names for our class representatives since many student got all 50 words right!!!!

If you can volunteer for our trip to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, please let us know as soon as possible!  This trip is creeping up on us and we still need more adults to join us!

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

Spell-a-thon Tomorrow - Dont forget to practice your words! Spelling test of the first 50 words will be going home tomorrow for students to collect their pledge money.

Spell-a-thon assembly tomorrow afternoon 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Today all the Grade 1 classes had the opportunity to estimate how many students it would take to measure from one end of the school to the other. Some of our estimates were very close as it took 137 students to go from one end of the hall to the other! As a challenge we asked the students how many children it would take to go all the way around the outside perimeter of the school. This estimation was difficult!  It took 454 students to go around the entire school! We had a lot of fun measuring!

Please remember to bring in your field trip forms if you have not done so already. We are still in need of a few more volunteers to join us at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. We will need a total of 5 parents per class. Please e-mail me if you are able to come!

Wednesday, May 4th

We had a great Science Day today! We had lots of fun with the scientists and learned some new experiments too! We built exploding volcanoes, made rainbow milk and grew germs! We also learned that there are good germs and bad germs. Over the next two days we will observe our germs as they grow. Some of the places we swabbed were: toilets, door handles, pencils, chairs, the smartboard, utility balls and even Mr. Spriggs computer! We will monitor to see where we found the most germs around the school. Where else do you think germs might be hiding at school? or in your home?

Thank you to the moms who came out and helped us this morning! We couldn't have done it without your support!

We are also looking forward to building bird houses on Friday morning and thank you to our parent volunteers, Mark, Lynn & Lisa who will be helping us!

If you are interested in volunteering for our field trip to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary on May 19th, please e-mail me. (This is a full day field trip.)

BITS & PIECES

Thank you to all the parents who sent in food for our teacher appreciation lunch today - everything was amazing! The teachers were all very grateful for the wonderful meal that was prepared for us. It was delicious!

Jeremy Fokkens has been our Hip Hop dance instructor for the past two years and he is also a photographer. You may be interested in checking out his photo blog. He is spending a year travelling to Nepal, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka photographing the different ways that people live as well as volunteering in schools. Our Day:

Like all building projects, we are slightly behind projected completion dates and continue to work hard to finish making our community!  Hopefully we will be able to place our buildings tomorrow...it's going to be a very full floor!

Our Science Day is coming up very soon and hope to have two more volunteers to help run the stations that we have organized!  Thanks to those who have signed up to help!

Reminders:

Please look for several handouts in your child's pack tonight.  There should be a green calendar, blue/yellow field trip forms.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to join in for the May 19th Fun Lunch as we will be on our trip to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. If you have already sent in your forms, they will be sent home tomorrow to adjust for the June Fun Lunch only.

Our CCRP magazine fundraiser is almost complete and the children are super excited with our prizes, 2 bikes and an X BOX 360!  Remember, additional order forms are available in the office. To date we have 113 orders, we still need 387 orders to draw for the X BOX so we have extended the deadline to WEDNESDAY MAY 4!!!! Any orders made after this date will not be eligible for the prize draw but the proceeds will go to the school.  Remember subscription donations to the library will be eligible for the draw as well as any on-line subscriptions.  Parents of the winning students will be notified and an announcement will be made for the students confirming the winners on May 5th.  Thank you again for your participation with our final fundraiser of the year, your past support has been outstanding, lets keep it going!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We have had TWO amazing opportunities made available to Grade 1 next week but we need volunteers to make them happen:

May 4 - Science (Germ) Day - A team of scientists wants to come in help us work through several science stations, including one that involves swabbing and growing GERMS!  Each class needs 4 volunteers for this.

May 6 - Birdhouses - Andrew Stiles is coming to build birdhouses with ALL the Grade 1, as a warm up for our coming trip to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary.  We are hoping to have Grade 4 help us build but hope there are a few parents available to support us!

I know these dates are soon but we need to work on their schedules; we tried for different dates but they just weren't available!

Please contact us ASAP if you can join us for these two in-school field trips!

Thanks in advance for your support!!!!

Today was a big day of continuing work we had begun last week. We finished our Earth Day posters,  worked on our final plans for our buildings and wrote about our long weekend in our journals.

Many of our Flat Stanley letters went out in the mail last week, and the last few will be going out tomorrow. If you still have not sent in your addressed, stamped envelope please send it tomorrow.

Ideas for Activities at home:

* measure various objects at home using non-standard units. (ie. measure the stove with spoons, the table with plates, the living room with shoes, etc.)

* have your child write 3 or 4 consecutive sentences about a variety of topics. In class we are working with students on writing multiple sentences that follow one another and make sense. We are also focusing on writing with attention to capitalization and punctuation.

We have finished our community maps! If you have the chance, please stop in and check out the amazing job that the students did on their community maps. They are on display outside of our classroom. We are now in the process of creating plans for our buildings that we will be including in our community. Next week we will begin building with all of our beautiful stuff!

In math today, Mr. Roberts' Grade 2 class came in to teach us about what they have been learning in measurement. They were our math teachers for the morning and we had a great time measuring with a variety of non-standard units.

Most of the students have also finished their Flat Stanley letters and many of them were mailed off today! We can't wait to get them back from our family and friends. Tomorrow we will do a Flat Stanley walk, where we will share the photos of all the things we have done with our Flat Stanleys so far.

STAFF APPRECIATION LUNCH
Tuesday May 3rd, 2011

Hi Moms, Dads and Friends:

With June quickly approaching, we would like to thank the staff at Panorama Hills School for everything they have done for our children this year.

We are hosting a Staff Appreciation Lunch for the teachers and support staff on Tuesday, May 3, 2011.  To make this event a success, we are asking for the support and participation of parents.

We are looking for volunteers to provide food and/or their time for set up as well as tidy up afterwards.   If you are able to contribute in either way we would greatly appreciate it.

If you are providing a food donation, please bring it to the office by 10:30am on
May 3rd in a container labeled with your name (this will make it easier to identify when you pick it up).  To ensure these delicious dishes do not go to waste, we suggest you send 4 - 5 servings only.   A little note of why you appreciate a staff member would be fantastic to share as well.

If you are able to volunteer for the event itself, please email Jen Rathbone at dougandjen@shaw.ca by April 23rd, indicating what time you are available:
We’d love your help at:
  • 10:30 – noon (preparation)
  • 12:30pm to 2pm (clean up)

If you are not a home cooking kind of person, yet would like to express your appreciation, here’s a few other ideas have been shared by the staff -

  • They would love plants for the classrooms and offices.  All plants will be cared for over the summer so they can join us again in September.

  • As you know, our library is in need of more books – especially picture books.   A gift template will be placed on the inside cover of each donated book.  If you would like assistance in choosing a title, please visit the library assistant, Mrs. Keall.

As always, thank you for your support!

Friday, April 15th

We had such a fun week! Yesterday we had a whole school snow building contest in the morning! The snow was perfect for making snowmen, forts and even bowling alleys!

Today the winning hockey teams from intramurals played the teachers at lunch. We had two great games!

Have a great weekend & don't forget to take Flat Stanley out on some adventures!

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Tuesday, April 12th

Where has your Flat Stanley been so far this week? We have talked about trips to the swimming pool and visits to Grandma's house...We are looking forward to seeing and hearing about all the adventures Flat Stanley has been on this week. Don't forget to bring your photos, writing and an addressed, stamped envelope to school next Monday, April 18th with Flat Stanley!

Please check your child's backpack today for our last fundraiser for the school year. We will be selling magazine subscriptions to help raise money for our school. All students received a very cool bendable pencil today too!

In Social Studies we have been talking about Urban and Rural communities. As a part of our Science unit on Building Things we are designing our own maps for a community to build. We have learned about the compass on a map as well as legends. Ask your child about the map they are creating and what are some important things we need to have in our community.

Friday is our Phys Ed teacher, Mr. V's last day. We will be welcoming Mr. Spriggs back to school next Monday.  To show our appreciation for everything that Mr. V has done for us over the past few months, we made him thank you cards in class today. We thought of many ways that he has helped us out, from taking us to our swimming lessons to helping out with hockey intramurals

Thursday, April 7th

We finished our Flat Stanleys! After reading the first Flat Stanley book by Jeff Brown, our classes made their own version of Flat Stanley. Some children chose to create a traditional version while others chose to make somebody else. We even have a few Flat Mrs. Kroekers and Mr. Simmons'! Your child will be bringing home their Flat Stanley tomorrow with a letter explaining the project.

Today we also started talking about our "I CAN" statements. An "I CAN" statement is a learning target that helps students understand the skills and knowledge that they will gain from a lesson or activity.  Teachers share with students the destination of the lesson – what to learn, how deeply to learn it, and how students can demonstrate their learning. An "I CAN" statement is a positive way of demonstrating success. As a result, students begin to take ownership for their learning and become more responsible, independent learners. (See our April Newsletter for more information).

Tuesday, April 5th

Today we continued our explorations of Measurement and Building and many new discoveries were made - especially during our tower building competition!  These units will be taking up a TON of our time over the next few weeks, as we are combining Math, Science and Social Studies together.  We will also be sending home some building homework (don't worry, it's a lot of fun) very soon.

We finished reading the chapter book, Flat Stanely today and will be beginning to create our own version very soon - look for this information to be coming home by the end of the week!

It was Day 2 of our new Guided Reading groups and we are starting to get into the flow of our new schedule.  All of our students seem really dedicated to using this time to improve their reading abilities!

Monday, April 4th

Welcome back to school! We had a great first day back. It was nice to see lots of smiling faces in class today and it sounds like everyone had a great Spring Break. We had the chance to share some of the things we did over the last week and then the students chose one or two things to write about in their journals. I am so pleased to see what great writers they are becoming!

We also started guided reading in our levelled colour groups today. Students will be involved in a variety of activities centred around further developing their reading skills for 30 min every day. All students will have the opportunity to participate in a small, teacher guided reading group every week. Other activities will include partner reading, non-fiction, poetry and reader's theatre.

In math we began work on our next two units, measurement and shape and space. We talked about the most effective way to measure and how to use different units. The classes began experimenting with measurement by choosing a unit and measuring the length of a desk. Next we will work on recording our findings. At home you can support this learning by measuring things around your house with a variety of units (ie. how many shoes to measure a room? how many plates long is the table? etc.)

In Science we have started to think about our Building Things unit. We talked about our proposed project, building a community and watched a video about the process of building a house. From here we will learn about the parts of a building (ie. foundation, windows, roof, doors, chimney, etc.) After we sort through our building materials we will begin to draw up plans for our proposed 'community'. If you have any additional materials at home, please send them in this week.

Have a great night!

Monday, March 21st

Happy Spring Everyone!

Swimming today was great! The children are learning so much in their lessons! It is fun to watch them take new risks and gain confidence as young swimmers.

We had another busy day with concert practice in the gym this afternoon. We are looking forward to showing off all of our hard work this Wednesday!

Note about the Spring Concert Wednesday, March 23rd:

The Spring Concert has finally arrived!  Doors open a half hour before the show, and students are expected to arrive between 6:00 and 6:15 on the evening of their performance.  Please drop off and pick up your child(ren) at the classroom. As the children are presenting two full performances, it is important that all students are present for both shows.

Mr. Simmons' and Mrs. Kroeker's class are being asked to please wear jeans and a black t-shirt on the day of the concert.

Remember, YOU MUST HAVE A TICKET TO ATTEND THE SHOW.  Young children who are able to sit on an adult's lap do not need a ticket.  Please plan to arrive early, as parking is limited.  If you are unexpectedly delayed, late seating will take place during the first appropriate pause in the program.  Assigned seats are not guaranteed after the performance starts.  Latecomers will be seated in the back out of courtesy to the performers and other audience members.
Panorama Hills School has hired a professional videographer to record all performances, and copies of the DVD will be available for purchase.  We ask that you please refrain from taking photos or video of the performance, as it interferes with the sight lines of other audience members and blocks access for the performers.

Thank you for your support and encouragement, and enjoy the show!

Send some happy and healthy thoughts to Mrs. Kroeker this evening as she had to go home sick this afternoon and missed our first whole grade practice for the Spring Concert.  (We are getting better and better, by the way!)

It feels like our days are passing really, really quickly lately - we are just so busy!  We worked on more story problems in Math today and followed this by comparing two versions of the Three Little Pigs.  We had some extra music time (our Rosie & Micheal poem is getting better and better) and finally got to go outside to draw our Winter Trees!  Tomorrow will be even busier....Spring Break will be here before we know it and there's so much to do still!!

Reminders:

Tomorrow is our first day of SWIMMING!  Please don't forget to bring a bag, bathing suit, underwear and towel!  It will help if bathing suits are on under clothing since we leave so quickly tomorrow.  Also, if you need goggles, pack those too!!!

Library Books:  We are now using large, plastic bags for our library books! All library books need to travel to and from school in these bags.  We have had to replace many many books this year and we hope to stop this by protecting them while they are in student backpacks.

Homework: We are going to be experimenting with an online homework question posted through our blogs.  Please complete the question below as homework!

Spelling - The spelling lists have two student-choice words on them this week.  I have to put up a link to the common words but you will need to ask your child for their two words to practice with!

Thursday, March 3rd

Today we had to have a very serious conversation about integrity and respect with Mrs. Unruh as our classrooms are experiencing difficulties with missing/damaged materials, poor listening skills and treating others with respect.  We would like to thank all those students who act with integrity and respect each and everyday and we encourage all of our families to have a discussion about making the right choices in all situations.

Thank you to all the parents who have signed up to volunteer for swimming. We REALLY appreciate it! If you are still interested in helping out, please e-mail me directly, and we can try to put you into our schedule.

Please look for the Swimming notice and consent form in your child's backpack today. They have also brought home a form for Fun Lunch and a March calendar. We have a very busy month ahead of us!

Please sign and return the swimming fees and blue forms as soon as possible. If we do not receive these, your child will unfortunately not be able to go swimming with us.

Today we read an alternate version of the Three Little Pigs. It was called The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by A. Wolf. The children enjoyed listening to this classic fairy tale told from the Big Bad Wolf's perspective. In class we are continuing to work on writing and illustrating our own versions of the story.

Report Cards go home tomorrow

There are many free games and activities using your own spelling words.  Follow the link above, click on "batch entry" and type in all the spelling words (including challenge words).  Then click on a game or activity.  The web site will automatically use your spelling words for the activities.

Monday, February 28th

Brrrr!!!! It was SO COLD outside today! We spent our day inside for lunch and recess.

This morning we continued our story writing about The Three Little Pigs. Students took the traditional story frame and made their own versions of this classic fairy tale. They chose to create an S map with pictures and labels or a comic strip format and are now working on writing their stories out in their journals. The children have become so involved in this activity and their stories are amazing! We have tales about The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark, The Three Little Flies and the Big Bad Frog, The Three Little Mice and the Big Bad Cat...It is so exciting to see their creative minds at work!

Thursday, February 24th

We had many exciting events happening today!

It was TWIN DAY and everyone was seeing double around the school.  Many student chose to come dressed like someone else and it was very exciting to find all the different twins around the school.  We even got a visit from Mr. Bimmons (who we discovered is Mr. Simmons' evil twin!)

First was our Friendliness assembly and we were able to view amazing examples of learning from many our the classrooms around the school.  We were treated to poems, songs and even some African throat singing!

Many of the students participated in Fun Lunch today, and all the students got to have a picnic in the gym!

After recess we also had the opportunity to watch space shuttle Discovery's final launch into space.  They are off to the International Space Station and when they come back Discovery will be taken out of service.  CBC was at our school to capture this historic moment and you can look for our school on CBC news tonight between 5:00 and 6:30. (Did you know that, during take off, the Discovery uses enough fuel to fill a swimming pool EVERY 25 SECONDS??)

SWIMMING: Look for swimming info to be coming home soon.  We will need 2 volunteers per day for each class!

Volunteer Calendar:

Please note that we are booked for swimming during the month of March (March 16-18 & 21st - 23rd) and will be looking for volunteers (TWO PER DAY) to help our students get changed in a quick and efficient manner - we often have a particular need for Dads to help out in the boys change room!  Grade 1 times will be in the morning, so if there are days you know you can help, please e-mail me!  rckroeker@cbe.ab.ca

Tuesday, February 22nd

Welcome back from our looooong weekend! I hope you all had a great few days and had the chance to spend some time with your families yesterday. The children had a lot to share about all the fun things they did.

Homework

Please see spelling list in your child's backpack. We have included their student ID number again this week for added practice. The children have been using their IDs to log on to the computers during our spelling station time in class.

Bits & Pieces

THURSDAY is a big day.
* ASSEMBLY in the morning at 9:10 (hosted by the Grade 2s).
* FUN LUNCH day. Students who ordered fun lunch will be receiving pita lunch.
* TWIN DAY! You you can can come come to to school school dressed like someone else! We hope to see a lot of twins, triplets, etc.

VOLUNTEERS

Please note that we are booked for swimming during the month of March and will be looking for volunteers (no more than 1-2 per day) The dates are: March 16-18 & 21st - 23rd to help our students get changed in a quick and efficient manner - we often have a particular need for Dads to help out in the boys changeroom! I don't the the exact TIMES for Grade 1 yet but if there are days you know you can help, feel free to e-mail me and let me know! Thank you very much in advance!

In math we had to work as groups to come up with as many CORRECT number sentences as possible for the number 12!  To make this harder, the groups were responsible to checking over the work of other students.

Today we went on a listening walk around the school. In small groups, we recorded the different sounds we heard in various areas (hallway, great hall, office, gym, library, etc.) Some of the sounds we heard were the same, but some were very different!

Did you know? Children have better hearing than adults. There are some high frequency sounds that people stop hearing around the age of 25. We did an experiment in class, and at 21 hertz the students were still able to hear the sound, but Mr. Simmon's and I could not! The children thought this was pretty neat!
