Spelling Quiz Tomorrow

We did our Taste Testing Party today! Thank you to everyone who brought in a snack to share - we had a fabulous variety of food and we had a lot of fun trying everything! We grouped our findings into the four categories, sweet, salty, sour and bitter. The children even tried baker's chocolate - and I had to laugh because they were so excited to eat the chocolate. But the looks on their faces when they realized what "bitter" tasted like was quite comical! :) Make sure to ask your child about some of the different snacks they ate today and which ones they liked the most and the least.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Here is a quote that a colleague of mine shared with me today. I thought I would share it with you...

“Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again. And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France.

When will we also teach them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel?

You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children.”

- Pablo Picasso, 1881-1973

Dear Parents:

We are discovering the sense of taste. Please help us have a taste-testing party! Assist your child in finding food to bring to school for our party. We need enough food for about 25 students to taste. For example, include a quarter of a pickle or one chip for each child. (Feel free to be creative!) Please make sure that any food you do send to school is NUT FREE. Write the name of the food on the bag; then return it to school for Thursday January 27th, 2011. We are going to taste the food and then decide whether the food is salty, sweet, sour or bitter.
Thank you,
Mrs. Kroeker & Mr. Simmons

Homework:

In our quest to personalize our spelling program, we are creating our own list based on the needs to our students. We have broken the list of 12 words into different sections; the first six words are from the top 100 most frequently used words while the next two are words that the students frequently ask for help on. The last four come from our other areas of study and will be useful when we are reading and writing for other subjects.

As we move on in this change, we will be modifying the amount of words for each child. We will also look at shifting the homework and the way we learn/practice the words in class.

Spelling Quiz and Grapheme Quiz came home with your child today.

New Spelling List came home today. Please check your child's backpack.

We have been talking in class about our virtue of the month: Commitment
Ask your child some things they do at home and at school to show commitment. We read the story a Promise is a Promise today.

Making the connection Idea: Have your child come up with one thing they can be committed to do at home and at school. (ie. put their dishes away after supper at home / help keep the lunchroom clean at school) You could also track their accomplishments on a chart for the month!

Thank you to everyone who did such a good job collecting their items for our "Beautiful Stuff" projects. We did a senses sorting activity with them yesterday using our different senses. Today we talked about describing words (ie. soft, smooth, bumpy, etc.) Ask your child about it.

Fun Lunch forms are due on Thursday. I am looking for a volunteer who would be able to come in on Thursday to organize/count all the forms and money AND who would be able to come on Fun Lunch day to help hand out lunches. Please email me if you can. Thank you.

***We are going on a field trip to the Y stage in the morning on February 9th. We need 3 parent volunteers to come with us from our class. Please let me know if you are available and would like to come with us! ***

Thank you,

Mrs. Kroeker

Please remember to bring in your "beautiful stuff" bags on Monday! We will be sorting our treasures in the afternoon.

Fun Lunch Forms are due back to school by Wednesday, January 12th.

We have started learning about our 5 senses. Today we listened to different sounds and drew pictures to represent how the sounds made us feel. Ask me about some of the sounds. Help your child think of different sounds that could represent different feelings (ie. raindrops = peaceful)

Grapheme Quizzes will go home on Monday.

Have a great weekend!

Monday, January 3rd

Hello and WELCOME BACK after our Winter Break! We hope all our families had exciting and memorable holidays!

Our Day:

Today we wrote in our journals about our holidays. We also began our exploration of the Five Senses. In Math we played Addition War and would love to play this game at home; all you need to is deck of cards with NO face cards (J,Q,K). Add Gym and Library to all this and we had a VERY busy day!

Homework:

For the next two weeks we will be learning the last set of graphemes instead of spelling words. Please see the following link for a list of the final graphemes. Please make sure to practice since this set is tough!

Graphemes 55-70
