(ie. you can use objects from around the home, when out grocery shopping, etc.) example: "If we bought 6 apples and 3 oranges, how many pieces of fruit would we have?"

Reminder: Thursday is Pajama Day!!! It is also our last day of school for the holidays. School will resume January 3rd.

Yellow Group

Orange Group

Purple Group

Red Group

Blue Group

Green Group

Please practice with your child in the manner that best suits your child. They might be more successful playing games like word searches, memory, word scrambles, or word fill ins. You could try going on a scavenger hunt to find the words or the letters of the words in your home or community. See if they can spot any spelling words on billboards as you drive by. There are many different learning strategies to try. See if you can find the one that your child responds to the best and then use it! It does not always need to be printing practice.

Homework

Graphemes 'ow' and 'ou'.   Print five times and review sounds.

This week's grapheme test will be on all the graphemes learned last week and this week.  This includes: 'er' as in her, 'ir' as in first, 'ur' as in nurse, 'wor' as in works, 'ear' as in early, 'sh', 'ee', 'th', 'ay', 'ai', 'ow' and 'ou'.

PICTURES! PICTURES! PICTURES!
All picture order forms are due on  this FRIDAY.  If your child requires retakes, please indicate in the box at the bottom of the form and send it in by Friday.  If your child was absent on picture day, they will automatically get their picture taken on retake day.

Family Photo day has been rescheduled for the spring.  This is so we can take our photos outside to accommodate our family pets!  Stay Tuned for the exact date!

Speaking of family photos, there are a few students who still need to bring in their pictures of their family and the groups they belong to.  Please try to have these in by Monday.

And speaking of Monday, we will begin our Tell and Show on Monday.  Those children indicated for Monday will present their item that starts with the letter A.

The information about "Tell and Show" came home today.  Please note that your child has a specific day to tell and show.  We will begin on Monday, October 18th.  In the event that there is a holiday on your child's day, they will present on the day after.

Your child does not have to choose an object that you have in your home.  Any object that starts with the letter of the week is acceptable.  If your child struggles with printing, writing three clues may be difficult.  Only have your child write what they are able to write without a struggle.  You can write some of the clues for them.  They do need to be able to read their clues so make sure you practice.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

It was a pleasure meeting all of the parents who came to school with their children last week and a joy getting to know each of your grade one students.  They have all grown up so much since last year when I watched them learn and grow in the Kindergarten!  I am looking forward to an exciting year with lots of new and interesting learning taking place.

Students and teachers in Grade One will be Inquiring about Changes in our World throughout the grade one year.  We will be asking questions such as:
How do we change?
Where can we observe change taking place?
What happens when we change letters in words?
How can we make and change patterns?
How can we change colours?
These are just a few examples of where our learning will focus over the next few months.

Last week, two sheets were sent home with your child on Friday.  One was explaining how to book a conference time during Patent - Teacher Conferences next Thursday and Friday.  The second blue sheet is to be filled out and brought with you during your conference time so that we can make the best use of our short time together.  If you are needing assistance booking your time, please feel free to call the school and we can assist you.

Your child's Homework Scribbler will be coming home today or tomorrow. Please refer to the letter included with the package explaining how you can assist your child with a few minutes of practice each day. We find that just a few minutes of parental support each evening makes a tremendous difference in a child's success with reading and wriitng by the end of the school year.

At this time, if you are dropping off your child at school, they should be dropped off and picked up each morning and afternoon outside the relocatable doors at the south end of the school. If your child is going home for lunch each day, please pick up and drop off at these doors as well. We do expect that each child have a pair of indoor shoes that can be left at school for the year. It is also helpful if your child's name is inside all items belonging to them as we sometimes have children with the same items.

Panorama Hills School is supporting the Terry Fox Fundraiser, 30th Anniversary Shoe Laces for $5.00 a pair.  Grade 4 students will be selling them at Lunchtime in the Grand Hall starting tomorrow.  If you do not wish to buy a pair of shoe laces but still want to donate, the grade 4's will be collecting a Toonie for Terry.  All proceeds go to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Have a great week and I look forward to meeting you later this week!
