Gung Hay Fat Choy! Happy Chinese New Year!
Bits & Pieces
Today we read a story called My First Chinese New Year and worked as a whole class in our big journals to represent what we learned about Chinese New Year. We know that Red means good luck and happiness. Oranges symbolize money and good luck. Children also receive red envelopes with money inside for Chinese New Year and get their hair cut to symbolize new beginnings.
In Science today we read a book about our sense of taste. Did you know that a catfish has taste buds all over its body? The students were asked to imagine what it would be like to taste a banana with your elbow! We also talked about how not everyone likes the same tastes. Talk to your child and family about their sense of taste. What is your favourite food? What is your least favourite food?
Tomorrow we will be doing a smell test to see how well our noses can identify different smells!
Homework
Tomorrow is our spelling review. Make sure you practice tonight so you can show off everything you learned at our spelling stations this week!
Parents, remember that spelling practice can be done in many different ways. Make a game out of spelling the words, or have your child try writing them in the colours of the rainbow using markers, crayons or pencil crayons. Another fun activity is to write the words with your finger in salt or shaving cream. The possibilities are endless!
Reminders
Hockey Club for Grade 1 students will be in the gym at lunchtime tomorrow.
The 100th Day of school will be on Wednesday, February 16th. In honour of the 100th day of school, we are challenging all Grade Ones to read for 100 minutes in the month of February! Please check for the Yellow reading chart in your child's backpack today.
Have a good night!

Homework
Spelling List went home today. Review on Friday.
Please read the note about bringing in an object for our feeling bags - something with an interesting texture. The students will be playing a guessing game using their sense of touch tomorrow.
Bits & Pieces
Purple Calendar for February went home today. Please note the special days this month:
Feb. 9th - Grade 1 Field Trip to Y Stage Theatre
Feb 14th - Valentine's Day / Friendship Day - Wear Red if you would like
Feb 17th - 21st NO SCHOOL
Feb 24th - Twin Day - dress the same as someone else!
In Language Arts today we started talking about Fairy Tales. What is a Fairy Tale? See if your child can tell you some important elements of Fairy Tales. We also talked about some of our favourite Fairy Tales. If your child has a Fairy Tale that they would like to share with the class they are welcome to bring it in to school. Please ensure that your child's name is in the book.
In Social Studies we have been learning about Community Helpers. We brainstormed important people in our community and the jobs they do to help us. (ie. police officers, fire fighters, teachers, librarians, doctors, veterinarians, dentists, etc.) Some students also shared the important jobs that their parents do! The students have realized how important everyone's role is in order to maintain a safe and happy community!

Spelling Quiz Tomorrow
We did our Taste Testing Party today! Thank you to everyone who brought in a snack to share - we had a fabulous variety of food and we had a lot of fun trying everything! We grouped our findings into the four categories, sweet, salty, sour and bitter. The children even tried baker's chocolate - and I had to laugh because they were so excited to eat the chocolate. But the looks on their faces when they realized what "bitter" tasted like was quite comical! :) Make sure to ask your child about some of the different snacks they ate today and which ones they liked the most and the least.

WORDS OF WISDOM
Here is a quote that a colleague of mine shared with me today. I thought I would share it with you...
“Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again. And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France.
When will we also teach them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel?
You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children.”
- Pablo Picasso, 1881-1973

Dear Parents:
We are discovering the sense of taste. Please help us have a taste-testing party! Assist your child in finding food to bring to school for our party. We need enough food for about 25 students to taste. For example, include a quarter of a pickle or one chip for each child. (Feel free to be creative!) Please make sure that any food you do send to school is NUT FREE. Write the name of the food on the bag; then return it to school for Thursday January 27th, 2011. We are going to taste the food and then decide whether the food is salty, sweet, sour or bitter.
Thank you,
Mrs. Kroeker & Mr. Simmons

Homework:
In our quest to personalize our spelling program, we are creating our own list based on the needs to our students. We have broken the list of 12 words into different sections; the first six words are from the top 100 most frequently used words while the next two are words that the students frequently ask for help on. The last four come from our other areas of study and will be useful when we are reading and writing for other subjects.
As we move on in this change, we will be modifying the amount of words for each child. We will also look at shifting the homework and the way we learn/practice the words in class.
Spelling Quiz and Grapheme Quiz came home with your child today.
New Spelling List came home today. Please check your child's backpack.
Grapheme Review Quiz Thursday. Spelling Quiz Friday.
